AC/DC had a song called "Highway to Hell." Tony Ray has been driving... no, accelerating down that highway. He doesn't want to go to the highway's final destination but he's too ill at ease with himself to stay in any of the rest stops along the way. However, Jen was the difference because she was an exit; the moribund journey to hell would have been over for Tony if he would just stay with her.
This brings up that unasked question - why did the author put Jen into the story? Jen was Tony's perfect girl, the dream girl, the one that fulfills his every lust and soothes his every guilt. Her continued existence would break the story because she is the exit clause, salvation for a forlorn and self-hating vepr. Could it be that our esteemed author is showing us that Tony can't free himself from his habits, can't stop his sadistic binges, can't keep his past from destroying his present, and can't stop his darker half from dictating his future? What was that one thought that made the difference while the vepr was deciding the fate of Jen?
