The legal definition is differing from state to state in the States as far as consent is concerned. California is unusually strict in that anyone under the age of 18 is forbidden from having sex even with others under the age of 18... not that it is really enforced. Iowa is more liberal in that an age of consent begins at 13 as long as both parties are with two years of each other (13-15, 14-16, 15-17, 16-18, 17-19) unless both are the age of majority. Age of consent is such an odd thing to me...
Well odd because of how the definition of adulthood has changed.
We live in an age of extended childhood. A recent healthcare bill that Bush veto'd would have in some ways redefined adulthood as starting at 23.

When I was in high school, there was an emancipated minor...age 15 who lived on her own and was more adult than many 30 year olds I've met.

Where I grew up in NC, a childhood buddy of mine had parents that were married at 14 and 17.

Go back further and the ages of marriage seem to get younger. When we died before age 40, that whole responsibility thing had to start a bit earlier, I guess.

Pedophilia is definitely a psychiatric term tying in with cultural perceptions.
